Over the years the technological advancement has brought about an improvement in creativity and film development. The use of music in films is regarded to be very significant. Music is considered to bring the right emotions to the viewers while helping them have an immense understanding of the movie (Heldt, 2013). In this essay, we will examine the use of music in films and the relevance of the various instruments, tones, melody, and harmony. In this case, we will examine the music in the film “psycho 1960,” and the analysis song is called The murderer by Bernard Herrmann.
The music in the movie was played using the string instruments that were played with deep, terrifying sound and the use of the pizzicato effects. The strings of the violin were stiffened to bring out the tension and harsh sound effects. The plucking out of the stiff sounds minor second and the significant sevenths brought about the dissonant music that brings about the startling feelings to the viewers. The use of strings in this movie is to match the dark horror theme of the movie. Also, the most memorable thing about music in the film is the three knifes scene. The music rhymes so well with the shrieking strings. The murderer music gives the film an impression like that of taking a roller coaster at a pleasure park and the getting back to those sloping inclines with the wind hitting on your face that feels like a punch on the front.
