INSTRUCTIONS:Write an essay (700–1000 words) that reflects on and analyzes your experience in class this term through the lens of your own learning process; in essence, examining and evaluating your metacognition in this course. The essay will outline your personal response (reactions, puzzles, connections, realizations) to the physical practice, and activities of this course (including discussions, readings, video viewings if applicable). This essay should demonstrate an awareness and analysis of your learning and thinking processes and an attempt to use the vocabulary we have been developing together this term. Students are encouraged to keep notes on their dance, somatic and improvisational training throughout the term – including focus, motivation, weaknesses, strengths, areas of improvement, epiphanies and successes – and find a way to articulate their findings for this paper. The demonstration of reflection and thoughtful content are required for this assignment. Reflective Essay on Dance Lessons
Dancing is not only an art, but a way of life. Different cultures around the world have different processes, steps, and purposes when it comes to their dance rituals, which have been shaped through time. Accordingly, contemporary dance has developed in relation to its environment and to the personality of the individual performing. This can be seen on how dancers from different backgrounds express their innermost feelings through bodily movements in the dance floor. In line with my experience, I also realized that dancing (even basic body movements) is one of the greatest forms of expression. Every moment creates a great deal of fulfilment as I perceive myself and my movements in relation to time, space, and energy, among others. In this paper, I would provide a deeper reflection of my experience during this class. This includes my strengths, motivations, and weaknesses, among others. Although it was only for a short while, I believe that dancing is indeed a way of life as it reflects a person’s innermost emotions.
The Dance Class
During the dance class, we have learned and memorized a lot of actions and movements from different dance varieties around the world. On their own, an action or movement is relatively easy to perform. However, coordinating them together becomes very difficult as my mind had to perform the task of simultaneously remembering the location and the bodily gesture involved. For example, moving to the right of my classmate becomes difficult while I am also trying to remember (movement recall) whether I would stretch or curl my arms and lean forward and backward. There was even one time when the increasing number of gestures that I had to perform caused my mind to go blank and complete the whole routine altogether.
However, as the dance classes progress, I started to get the hang of the movements and gestures involved. I realized that while memorizing and learning steps one-by-one seems to be very tedious, having a fine ‘muscle memory’ allowed me to insert some creativity and increase my somatic perception of what I am doing. For example, the experience of learning the dance and performing them already have very different effects. On the one hand, simply memorizing and imitating the movements of another seems to be dull and cumbersome....
