Show Selection Assignment
Now you have a better idea of how to find theater, and it's a good thing because now you have to get out there and watch it, well in a theoretical way.
For this assignment, research the productions that you would be going to watch during the semester if theaters were open and it were safe to do so. In fact, since it's all a theoretical exercise anyway, you're welcome to choose any show that has ever existed - as long as it meets the category requirement (described below). You must select one show to fill each of the following categories:
1. Professional Musical (A production of a musical done on Broadway, Off Broadway, or in a Regional Theater).
2. Professional Strait Play (A production of a strait play done on Broadway, Off Broadway, or in a Regional Theater).
3. Community Theater (A production of a musical or strait play produced by a community theater - a theater company run and operated by volunteers).
4. Theatrical Event (A theatrical production that does not easily fit into any of the categories above. Here are a few examples: Blue Man Group, Stomp, Sleep No More).
Now, for this semester, the bad news is you won't actually be going to see these productions. But the great news is you also don't have to spend the money on the tickets! This will allow you to dream big and "select" shows that some students in previous semesters had to steer clear of because of the excessive expense. In the end, you'll still need to watch digital shows in place of these shows, but you can worry about that later, and those shows don't need to be related to these selections.
To complete this assignment, research one production from each of the four categories above. Create a document (.doc, .docx, or .pages), and in this document include the following information for each of the above categories:
The category (Professional Musical, Professional Strait Play, Community Theater, or Theatrical Event).
The name of the production.
The name of the theater where this production will take place in the future or has taken place in the past.
The location of the theater (city, state, and any other information that you feel would be helpful).
A website for the production, theater, or company.
Remember, you must provide the above information for each of the 4 categories.
You may wish to look over the lecture "Broadway and Beyond" to help you to determine what productions will fit into each category. Your paper does not need to be formal. You can fill out all of the information like an outline or in bullet format.
If all four of your selections fulfill the requirement for each of the four individual categories you will receive 100% on the assignment. If however you have a submission that doesn't fit in one of the categories then for each category that is not met you will lose 25% of the total score. I will allow one resubmission of the assignment, but you will only be able to earn back a portion of the points. It is your responsibility to research shows and companies to assure that each submission counts towards the requirements for each category.
For instance, if you submit a show to count towards your Professional Strait Play category and I inform you that it's actually a Professional Musical, you will lose 25 of the 100 points for the assignment. Once you submit an appropriate alternative I will give you some of those points back, but only some of them.
