Introduction
The movies, Malcolm X, was directed and written by Spike Lee in 1992. It is an American biographical drama film that focuses on Malcolm X, an African American activist. The film traces Malcolm X's evolution from childhood, hustler, and thief. It shows Nebraska's rural poverty in the 1920s and the tough streets of Roxbury and Harlem. All these events happen during the strict world of Black Muslims. It is also important to note that the film dramatizes Malcolm X's major life events. The main happenings portrayed in the film include his imprisonment, how he became a Muslim, his membership and ministry work in the Nation of Islam, and marriage to Betty. Another important issue covered in the film is his pilgrimage to Mecca, where his beliefs and attitude about Whites was changed. The film articulates and shows several issues in the United States society, such as crime, prostitution, racial discrimination, drug abuse, religion, political assassinations, and prostitution. These issues are portrayed all through the life of Malcolm X. Nevertheless, He grows to become one of the most influential personalities in the United States. He challenges the institutions in authority confidently and bravely.
In the film, Malcolm X noted that “we didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us.” This phrase reveals that the presence of Blacks in the United States was never out of their willingness. In this regard, it is very hard for the Black Americans to succeed more when they are compared to whites. The Black community has poor access to opportunity when they are compared to their white counterparts. According to Malcolm X, Black people are not Americans. They were just Africans who were in America (Woodson). There are many injustices and brutality that the Blacks are facing in the United States. Racial discrimination is rampant and there is unequal access to basic amenities such as housing, healthcare, education, and financial support. There are many historical injustices against the blacks as we can see through the film.
Incarceration also occurs more to Black people compared to the whites. There are high levels of discriminations that are perpetrated against Black people. While both the Whites and Blacks commit crimes at the same rate, the laws are enforced discriminately based on the racial affiliations. Many Blacks are arrested due to use of drugs while the whites are left free. When we consider the rates of unemployment, we can see that many Blacks are twice likely to be unemployed compared to the Whites. Another study revealed that when the Blacks are employed, their wages are much lower compared to those of White people. The wages earned by Whites are 25% more than those of Blacks. The inequalities are further complicated by the prevalent inequalities within the system of justice. Cases involving Blacks have strict and harsher judgements compared to those of white people, even when their crimes are related (Do Something Org).
