Food and Identity
Introduction
Leung Ping-Kwan demonstrates how food relates to our identity. He says in his literary works, 'we are what we eat.' This is true as food forms a more significant background on attitude, behavior, and thoughts, which greatly determines one's relationship with others. As a fact, food plays a vital role in developing an individual's or communal identity. Furthermore, Leung elaborates that great conquerors and leaders like the colonialists have something in the food culture that empowers them to act swiftly with appropriate knowledge and scheme. The two main themes presented in Classical poetry from the "Book of songs" to the Three Kingdoms are a feast in political culture and food and temporality. Therefore, people need to embrace food culture as it transcends to the formation of identity and interpersonal relationship.
Thanksgiving Scenario
During thanksgiving in American society, food plays a vital role in bringing the community together and enhancing interrelationships. Thanksgiving holiday is a big day celebrated in American society with a variety of meals. The majority of the dishes served are traditional, and consist of turkey served with various meals. It is a celebration day that reports more indulgence in food consumption than any other day in the States. The native foods prepared during the thanksgiving holiday are native foods that the pilgrims learned or received from the native Americans. The use of turkey on the thanksgiving day precedes the holiday by Abraham Lincoln, who insisted no American should refrain from turkey during a celebration on the thanksgiving holiday(Benavides‐Vaello and Brown 2367). Interpersonal relationships are enhanced during the period of thanksgiving. The pilgrims have a good relationship with the natives as well as their foodways they copied. From the Classic of Poetry, food was associated with pleasure and aroused the passing times' awareness. For example, a Latin word commonly used in the poem "Seize the day” finds its significance in these Chinese poetries. Further, the description of good and wine shows the meaning of life and what comes after an individual's demise. The wine was a depiction of the classical Chinese literature and the identity of the poet. Wine also cultivated poetic societies and illustrated some of the vital facets of poetic performance.
