Human-induced climate change has become a big threat to all life on Earth, despite receiving little attention from politicians. If the present rates of emissions continue, it is expected that there will be a widespread economic and agricultural collapse, loss of coastal land, severe and frequent natural disasters, water and food shortages, and refugee crises. The issue drew the attention of some of the 20th century artists and painters such as Alexis Rockman, Xavier, Cortada, and Marina Zurko, who centered their work on painting New York City as a polluted city that needs attention. They achieved this through their artwork, which is presented in different forms and also forming the basis of evolution of modern artwork.
Alexis Rockman
Alexis was born in New York in 1962. He found out about climate change from a paleontologist and got concerned about the trends of climate change. As such, he focused his art on coping with what he witnessed concerning climate change promoting support for conservation (Pelto, 2015). His artwork painted New York as one of the most affected cities due to high carbon footprint and emission of greenhouse gases. Through his works, he also encouraged people to render movements of genocide, extinction, population explosion, and political discord visible. In 19991, Alexis created the Manifest Destiny, which was an oil painting standing at 24 feet long (Kolbert, Wilson, & Lovejoy, 2017). The artwork explored how the waterfront at Brooklyn would appear after the melting of the glaciers. His works showed how the city would turn ugly as a result of climate change.
Xavier Cortada
Xavier was born in New York in 1964. As he grew up, he witnessed the rising sea levels in South Florida and considered how this could result in a disaster.
