In this chapter, Douglas defines freedom as the absence of necessity, coercion or constraint in choice or action. He talks about freedom in an attempt to create a picture about what slaves endure. Being a young slave, he did not understand what freedom meant, until he experienced it.
Slaves were born in confined areas and not allowed to experience the freedom of the outside world. The slave masters practiced this isolation to ensure that their subjects remained obedient and content on their way of life. Douglas writes about freedom after experiencing it and realizing how much of it was taken away from him and his fellow slaves.
