Analysis of the biographies of Ely S. Parker, David Walker, and Judah Benjamin depicts the diversity of the American experience and their struggles during the Civil War. During the Civil War, Parker, an Indian policy defender rose from the position of the “great captain” to become a Military Secretary and left an indelible mark in the U.S. history during the Appomattox surrender. He continued to make a meteoric success in white society to carve out a place for himself in 1865 when he later become a spokesman and key consultant in Washington on Indian policies.
