Throughout the course I have worked to present an argument, supporting it with evidence and examples. While we have touched on several topics two have dominated the course, how labor was often taken advantage of to grow the New World and America, with an important aspect of that labor being some form coerced labor, slaves, or a developing working class. I have worked to show how the ideas of labor have changed over time, how these ideas often changed differently by region and economic model. We have looked at how differing ideologies of labor influenced politics and society, and how societal forces like economic self-interest and religious doctrine influenced the ideologies of labor. Second, I have tried to show how regional sectionalism and division grew around various ideals such as economic ideologies, religious influences, international and internal political influences, and national goals. We have seen how things such as economics, western expansion, religion, economic transformation such as industrialization, Indians, international trade, the slave trade, gold, land, nationalism, nativism, immigration, imperialism, and especially slavery along with many other forces have shaped our nation leading up to 1860. I have worked to show how these developments came to bring the United States into a Civil War. PROMPT: Now I want you to do your best to write 750-1200 words about what brought about the Civil War. If you select from all your study guides (for exams 1,2,&3) the terms you think matter most in the issues around the causes of the Civil War, you’re halfway there. Then you put these terms in a useful order, and interpret them, tell each term’s story and what it means in a way that supports your claim about the causes of the war. For example, when I discussed the Second Great Awakening, I told you its content and interpreted it in a way to highlight an emerging difference of use and interpretation of religious meaning between free states and slave states. This is meant to feed my argument that the Civil War was about slavery. Speak to specific examples with some detail and significance that illustrate impact of concepts. Remember many issues are connected to each other. I argue that in the United States slavery became connected to almost all issues of discontent between the North and the South(don’t state this this is too vague but I don’t want to give you a free thesis, you need to devise your own). As the South became a slave society slavery became embedded in meanings of politics, economics, religion, society, culture, and even demographics. This connection means that I argue, although things like the economic Tariff of 1828 may have had a role in the discontent that leads to the Civil War, and might be mentioned in an essay as a cause, it is not “the cause” and it cannot be discussed without discussing slavery as they are connected for slavery shaped the South’s economic system, culture, religious practices and many other facets we covered this semester. The Essay is Cumulative, so you may touch on anything from the semester you feel you can argue as a cause of the Civil War. Note I want to see a variety of examples from across British Colonial and U.S. History. (For example, you could include some examples from the 1620s-1670s, 1680-1700s, 1700-1770s, 1770s-1810, 1810- 1850s, 1850s-1861) While you do not need to hit every one of these periods (this is just an example), if you overly limit yourself to a narrow range of information it will impact your score. And you must take several examples from each class unit. About Citations, you may use any form of citation you like MLA, APA, or Chicago. Just make sure you adequately inform me of the source and location you will not be penalized. ALL quotes must be in quotations and be cited. Introduction
The civil war in the United States started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The war involved Northern and Southern states that had developed in different lines economically, politically, and socially. Ideally, the North had become more industrialized as Northerners had invested in transportation systems, communication networks, and financial industries such as banking. On the other side, the South remained an agrarian economy where the Southerners maintained large farms and were focused on producing commercial crops. Additionally, Southern states relied on slaves as their primary sources of labor. This paper highlights critical issues that facilitated and fueled civil war in the United States.
First, slavery was a critical issue that facilitated the disruption of the Union. The Southern states that were highly dependent on salves were determined to dissolve their union with the United States and wanted to gain their sovereignty, which would guarantee them their own constitution; this would make it easy for their Southerners to expand the institution of slavery. In the South, slaves were considered as individual properties, and they signified the wealth of the Southerners. On the other side, Northern states were keen on abolishing slavery because it was inefficient; Northerners would rely on immigrants who would be hired at low wages. The need for the Southern states to abolish the federal laws that restricted them to keep slaves promoted secession throughout the South. Besides, Confederates also shed the American Identify and embraced the Confederate nationalism, which encouraged and promoted slavery and where the slaves were considered as unequal to the white man and provided free labor in whites’ plantations. In his speech, Alexander Stephens, who was the Vice president of the Confederacy, maintained that slavery and white supremacy were the cornerstone of the Confederate nation. He states that the Confederate nation is founded “upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man”.
