Use of Atomic Bombs in Japan
The United States and the Japanese engaged in a fierce war in 1944 and all signs indicated that Japan was losing. In spite of all the apparent signs of victory, President Trauma needed to end the war the soonest possible (Barnes para. 5). As a result, he did not hesitate to use the atomic bomb once it was completed. There were various reasons that precipitated the dropping of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kort points out the following as reason behind President Trauma's decision (113)
* President Trauma wanted to end the war the soonest possible with the least American causalities. This means that the President was only concerned about the quickest means of ending the war and not how to avoid using the atomic bomb.
* Need to offer tangible justification for the Manhattan project. This was a program that had cost approximately $1,889,604,000 and the use of the atomic bomb was perceived to be a sure justification of its cost.
* The need to impress the Soviets. As the war was nearing over, the Soviets had accrued military power and the United States considered it a crucial strategic plan because it had achieved military control over majority of the Eastern Europe states. This means that the decision by the US to bomb Japan was coined with Trauma's confrontational tackle of the Soviet Union.
* The US did not receive incentives to persuade her to stop using the bombs. The US had invested a lot in the weapons and they detonated them with an argument that they were developed to be used.
* Response to Pearl Harbor attack. According to President Trauma, it was necessary to respond to the atrocities committed by Japan against the Americans in the Pearl Harbor with immense magnitude.
Although President Trauma was ready to end the war within the shortest possible, he was concerned about using a means that could not result to American causalities, or the least causalities, if there was to be any. He instructed General MacArthur to find estimates of causalities if they were to use the Downfall Operation approach to invade Japan (Frank 341). The General estimated 31,000 U.S. casualties while the Joint Chiefs pointed out that the causalities could be seven times more.
