Introduction
FIJI WATER BOTTLE TRAVEL STORY
Despite environmental concerns, bottled water consumption per person doubled from 16.7 gallons in 2000 to 36.4 gallons in 2015 in the United States. At the center of this rise was water from Fiji Water, the only multinational company that has its roots in Fiji. Other than its unique source of water, Fiji Water’s growth is also attributed to the recycling nature of the bottles used. This paper aims to describe the travel story of Fiji Water bottles and why the purchase of bottled water has increased rapidly despite environmental concerns.
Fiji Water
Founded in 1996, Fiji Water began when David Gilmour discovered a massive aquifer on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. Gilmour went on to obtain a 99-year lease of the land directly above the aquifer and set up the company’s first bottling plant. The company experienced rapid growth, which led to the construction of another bottling company that produced 25 million bottles of water per year. Since 2008, 97% of Fiji Water is exported to the United States, Canada, and Australia, which are the largest bottled water markets in the world (Jones, p 115).
The travel story of Fiji Water bottles
The production of Fiji water bottles starts with the manufacturing of plastic resin, which is done by Amcor Plastics, a company in San Francisco. Plastic resin is a high-grade plastic commonly known as Polythelen Terephthlate (PET) that is preferred for its durability and ease of recycling (Winter). Water filled in the bottles originates from a protected artesian aquifer found deep underground in the remote Fiji Islands. Therefore, to fill the bottles, Fiji Water uses a sophisticated pumping system to draw the water out of the artesian aquifer and then dispense the contents into the bottles in a way that the water does not come into contact with aboveground oxygen. The entire bottling process is “closed”, so the pristine quality of the water is untouched by aboveground air until the consumer twis...
