Stories narrated orally by recounting what one has heard or recording observations are prone to manipulation. A lead inquisitor should be able to ask questions that help determine the accuracy of the information, the character of the informant, whether the person is lying or forging documents, under pressure or duress, and the content of the questions should eliminate bias and personal opinion.
Similarly, hadiths, which are reports of the words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad, were reported by his followers called the companions, and critics have argued that they were subjected to manipulations.
