The Cause and Effect on the Murder of Vincent Chen Vincent Chen was born in 1955 and died in 1982 at the age of 27. According to Rhoda, Vincent who was a Chinese American was beaten brutally in Detroit in June 1982 by Ebens and Nitz who were jobless automobile staffs. Ebens and Nitz beat Vincent because of a mistaken identity. "Ebens had earlier mistaken Chin for a Japanese American at a local bar and accused him of contributing to unemployment in the auto industry."(Rhoda 11). The beating of Vincent resulted in his demise within the same week. The judge did not charge both the perpetrators under a hate-crime-statute, hence, acquitting Ebens of manslaughter. Instead, the judge sentenced both Ebens and Nitz to a probation of three years. In addition, the judge fined them $6,000 in total to be shared equally and $780 each as costs for the case after listening to the defense lawyers only and neglecting the lawyer from the prosecution side (Rhoda). This sentencing was too lenient. According to Terri, the judge's soft sentencing of both Ebens and Nitz in the appeal created a lot of violence form the members of the public over the assassination that comprised head kicks by Ebens using a baseball bat while Nitz held the deceased. This act had the qualities that are consistent with hate crimes but the judge did not consider that, which culminated into an, "an example of the general acceptance of the model minority stereotype." (Rhoda 10).
