Introduction
The beauty in poetry lies not in its words, but in their aftereffect on the audience. Poetry is a vessel that channels feelings from the poet to the reader. The fantastic thing is, everyone can be taken to a different emotional place in the same poetry. It is safe to say that good poetry speaks to the heart and not the mind. Some assume that poetry is all about the hidden meaning, yet it is really about embedding emotions in words. The ability of poetry to uniquely connect with people’s hearts lies in the strength of the author to harness limit experiences. Analysis of poems can help in telling the experienced and expert ones from armatures depending on how well they achieve this. To push the limits of imagination, the poem must possess the right balance of meter, rhyme, and figurative language.
Representation of Limit Experiences
Charles Baudelaire compels us to visualize ancient Paris in his poem “the Swan.” He alienates himself in his own city and tells of his disappointment and longing for the old times. The writing shows someone that is nostalgic of the ancient city. The writer expresses his melancholy by painting a picture of a widow in mourning (Baudelaire par 4). The thought of this grieving lady evokes deep feelings of sadness and longing and further emphasizes the depth of the message. As the poem comes to an end, we gain further understanding of the poet’s feeling of alienation (Baudelaire par18). By using relatable examples, the widow, and the sailors, the poem invokes more intense emotions in the reader and enables the reader to connect to the emotions of the reader. The end of the poem leaves the audience in an imagined state of loneliness. Loneliness and nostalgia are significant themes in this particular piece. It is by pushing the imagination that a poem can drive one into a deep emotional state and thus allows the poet to poke into the emotions of the reader. The poet uses situations and objects that are relatable to the reader to ensure that the reader connects to the poet’s emotions. Therefore, this is one of the ways through which poets create an emotional connection with their readers.
“Little old Women,” another of Baudelaire’s poems exploits limit experiences to connect to the reader. In this piece, the poet draws more on death and spirituality. The piece pushes the reader's imagination to a somewhat unfamiliar place, the afterlife. The reader uses death to exaggerate the emotions of pain, resentment and fear. Throughout Baudelaire’s works, we can vividly relate to his sentimentality about the olden times. The feelings created by these pieces come from our own imaginations. The further these imaginations are pushed, the deeper the emotions generated. These imaginations come from the abstract pictures painted by the poet. The way to the deepest feelings of the recipient is therefore through their own imagination. The poet paints pictures that require the reader to interpret through imagination, and this is how the poet drags the reader into his (poet’s) world of imagination.
