Dramatic and Situational Irony in “Death of a Salesman”
Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, is a classic example of irony, conflict, and fate all through the play. Aged well above sixty years, Willy Loman is the main character in this play. During his youthful years, Willy believed that he had the secret to success and believed that he could achieve success through working hard after establishing his sales firm. Nonetheless, mediocrity ensued and his inability to achieve his dreams made him live in denial by relishing past events that he considers more successful than his current life. While Willy considers his past a success despite him failing in his salesman’s career and life, his upbringing of his sons is through the same failed principles he upheld in life as he identifies them as the right way, which is ironic considering his failures.
