The "I, Pencil," is an essay that focuses on enlightening the masses about the energies that exist in the diverse skills of a people, however, humble they might seem to be. This essay exposes how the different skills, though unknown to many people, work together to produce amazingly end products (Gwynne, 57). The writer of this essay, who is a "pencil", goes further to disclose that there are several people and processes involved in its production. Nonetheless, majority of the people or the processes are not directly aimed at its production. For instance, the miners of the ore that is used as one of the raw material do not do the mining in order to have the pencil manufacture, but; rather they do the mining to meet their other needs or get some goods and services in return.
The essay also highlights how all the processes leading to the ultimate production of a pencil happen harmoniously without being directed by anyone. For example, the constructors of the railway lines did not do the construction for the manufacture pencils but for transportation. Nevertheless, it is through the railway lines that the cedar logs are transported to the manufacturing industries. The writer of the essay goes further to elaborate on the production of the saw that is used to cut the cedar trees in Northern California and Oregon. The production of the cutting saw may seem petty, although, the point it intends to disclose is the fact that all processes and human activities are valuable (Gwynne, 119).
