The discovery of cell phones is arguably one of the most significant recent technological advancement of our times. In the recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people using mobile phones globally, and they have become necessary for each human being’s existence. The extensive use of cell phones has a remarkable impact on health, physical, aesthetical, economic, and social spheres of human life. Mobile phone technology has many positive effects on people today. However, the utilization of the same technology also has adverse effects on people in both developed and developing countries.
There are several positive impacts of using mobile phones. First, the use of cell phones improves the convenience of communication thus making it easier to stay in touch with friends, relatives, and loved ones. Unlike the conventional landline telephones, cell phones are convenient, and one can utilize them anywhere as long as there is network coverage of the service provider. Mobile phones also provide users with short message services (SMS) making them more lucrative compared to landline phones. Many business people also prefer mobile phones as it enables them to maintain correspondence with clients, suppliers, distributors, financial institutions, as well as business associates. In addition, mobile phone technology allows families to maintain their kinship ties despite significant geographical disparities.
Secondly, mobile phones have a significant positive contribution to people’s social lives. Other than voice and short message services most cell phones have radio, cameras, alarm clocks, Internet connectivity, geographical positioning system among other applications that enrich social lives. Techno savvy individuals take advantage of such features positively to organize and maintain social contacts with relatives and friends. The youth heavily utilizes social networks such as Skype, Facebook, and Twitter for both entertainment and accessing information. In the recent years, mobile phones can carry out money transfer services whereby the sim card also acts as a unique personal identifier. Banks have equally been able to allow their clients seamlessly to access their account information such as checking balances and more through their cell phones.
