Inequality remains a major hurdle in realizing human development in societies. Gender inequality poses as the greatest barrier of all the inequalities. Due to the socially ascribed roles of being a woman or man, women are at a disadvantage and face discrimination in workplaces, access to health, education, and political representation. The global gender gap remains wide with the gender inequality index still high affecting human development. The U.S as at 2016 world rankings, stands at number 45 with 0.722 inequality and 0.920 Human Development Index. India at number 87 with 0.683 inequality and 0.624 Human Development Index (World Economic Forum).
In the U.S, a woman makes 77cents for a $1 made by a man. Based on gender differences, other inequalities such as wage inequality has substantially increased. Overall, men engage in well-paying jobs, unlike women. Moreover, women undertake most of the unpaid work like child care. Nonetheless, there is an overrepresentation of the female gender in U.S industries like health services, education and other service sectors which pay fairly less compared to male-dominated sectors like constructi...
