Tohoku Earthquake 2011 in Japan
On Friday March 11 the year 2011, Japan woke to sad day as an earthquake of a magnitude 9, brought to the land massive destruction through a tsunami in the afternoon. The impact of the Tohoku Earthquake was so great that debris of the tsunami found their way to North American beaches two years later. Although this was a major earthquake, it was not the biggest in the century as there was another massive earthquake measuring 9.1 magnitudes and claimed more than 230,000 lives and billions of dollars in destruction. This took place in the year 2004, in Banda-Acheh, Sumatra.
In Japan, the earthquake and the tsunami took the country and scientists by surprise as they had not expected such a magnitude. The expected earthquake was expected to strike the northern parts of Honshu in the country’s main land and at a lesser magnitude. Although a faction of geologists had warned that there could be a repeat of a previous and similar tsunami which took place in 869, their calls were neglected, relative to the time gap.
