In What Ways Do Our Experience Shape Us in New York City
In his book “The Colossus of New York,” Colson Whitehead explains how different people have varying viewpoints on New York and talks about how the city he used to know is no longer in existence. Whitehead further makes a point that as time passes, everything will change and the New York people will be used to in the future will also be gone. In his introductory chapter, “City Limits” Colson talks about “My Own City”, where everyone will see the city differently in their unique ways (Whitehead 1025). In a nutshell, the chapter is about how New York is constantly changing on a daily basis without us noticing. The essays, travel sketches, poetry, and reminiscences bundled into a book entitled “The Sense of Sight” by the British novelist and art critic, John Berger, take a further examination on this note. Berger responds to the most thoughtful questions that are posed by the world the way we see it. In “Manhattan”, Berger makes a claim that the city is peopled by people who have been resigned to being deceived on a daily basis by their hopes (Berger 61). From such a betrayal comes unmatched cynicism, wit and what is regarded to be their own realism. The author challenges the readers to perceive their surroundings in a whole new way.
