Teenager marriages
Introduction
Historically teenage marriages have been allowed even by law. In the ancient Rome the minimum age requirement for the boys was 14, while the girls could get married at 12.Later when Rome became Christianized the ecclesiastical law used by the Catholics, adopted these minimum ages. Even when England broke away from the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church carried forth the same age minimums, which would later be incorporated in the English civil laws. These would later on be passed along to America during the colonial time. Today most of the states allow early marriages and 18 and 19 with exception of couples that are pregnant or those that have had a child. It is the rate of these marriages in the recent past and the associated research findings that indicate an increasing failure rate that makes this one of the most interesting topics.
Thesis statement: teenage marriages have been around for quite some time and continue to elicit different negative opinions.
While teen marriages were a common place in the recent years due to the legislative mechanisms that were in place, there have been rapid changes. These came due to the free public schooling, which led to compulsory schooling laws and labor laws. Work permits that required one to have schooled for a certain period and age also increased the age that was practical for the teenagers to get married.
The limit by state laws uses two rationales to curtail the teenagers from taking the step to get marriage at their tender age. One is that, most teenagers that want to get into marriage do not compare their long term goals to their current ones.
