Fear motivates the boys to draw strength and overcome struggles in We The Animals" by Justin Torres
The three boys are aware of their situation living in an unstable family where there is constant fight between their parents. There are also aware about the prevailing economic conditions, where the parents are in and out of low paying jobs. Fear in We The Animals is represented by inadequacy that the children feel, meaning that they have to draw strength from each other if they are to succeed. Since the boys have to scrounge for food, and attach meaning to their life, the tumultuous relationship of the parents draws them even closer. Even though, they can barely understand the reason for the family instability, it is through their bonding that acts as a shield form the difficulties in their home.
The three brothers are in a tight knit bond, as they go out of the house almost at the same time. There is fear that if they are not together, then they may not be able to cope well with their father’s abuse and mothers depressive episodes. Since they are at times bored and unattended they stick together to cause mayhem in the neighborhood. The fear that things may not getter better motivates them to look out or each other and share what they have. In order for the three of them to survive they need to look for food which had been forgotten in the hope that this would ease their hunger pangs. If one of them acted alone, then the others would have been disadvantaged, and sticking together was only natural for them.
