Wk 5 Team - Community Writing – Police Brutality

Write a 500-word essay, as a team, on a topic that one of the members of your team wrote on in Weeks 1 through 4. In this case, you write on the same topic, but this time, you represent the viewpoint of a specific community associated with the topic. This essay should be a collaborative effort of your entire Learning Team in which every member is fully involved.

  • Choose what community your Learning Team is going to represent, and research that community group.
  • Determine what this community has argued on this topic.
  • Identify a position in relationship to that community.
  • Write your essay together as one voice.

For example, imagine that your chosen weekly topic has been taxation. Each week, you approached the topic as an individual, with your own experiences and opinions on the matter. For this week, imagine you represent a group of your neighbors concerned about a particular taxation issue, and you are collaboratively writing to your state representative to affect some change or notify your representative about a shared situation.

Consider how your approach will change as you shift from writing as an individual to writing as part of a team. How might your statements be generalized to include everyone? How might they still point out individual needs? Does this process dilute the essence of the paper, or do the main ideas still come through strongly?

You will probably find it useful to change tone, vocabulary, organization, or style to make this new essay meet the requirements.

As you make your argument, support your points fully with properly cited evidence. As with the individual essays, there is no specific requirement for the number of outside sources you should use, so use as many sources as you need to support your argument. You may reuse sources used in any of the earlier essays or add new sources as appropriate.

Format your paper consistent with MLA guidelines.

Police Brutality
Police brutality refers to the violation of the civil rights where police officers exert unwarranted, excessive, and unreasonable force against the citizens. Police brutality includes physical or mental injury, that is, assault and beatings, murder, property damage, force arrest, and physical or verbal harassment. Police brutality can be caused by a criminal justice system that discourages prosecutors from checking on police misconduct. It can also be caused by institutionalized systems of police training.
Effects of Police Brutality
There have been several cases of police brutality worldwide, such as George Floyd’s death, which has led to protests in Minneapolis (Furber et al., 2020). Another incident happened in Louisville, where Breonna Taylor was killed after police officers entered into her home. Following that, seven other people were killed during protests over the death of Breonna Taylor (Baker, 2020). In the United States, police brutality has had several negative impacts, especially on us, as the Latino and African American communities. Police brutality has affected our health, our parenting, and well-being (Delgado, 2016)). Research has shown that police officers in the United States kill about 1000 people every year. Most of them are young people, actually the minorities. The number of African Americans killed is thrice the number of whites killed (Lewis, 2019).
One of the reasons that make the American police officers torture us as Latin and African American communities is racial discrimination. It has also been found that several police brutality against some young men aged 18-26 has subsequently affected their mental health (Delgado, 2016). Police brutality, such as murder happening near expectant mothers, can affect the health of the unborn babies. Also, police brutality can lead to preterm births due to the chronic stress that posed to the mother of the unborn child. A research was conducted to compare the birth outcomes between expectant mothers leaving at close proximity where police killings occur and those living in the areas which had not reported killings (Lewis, 2019). It was noted that babies born in areas where the mothers were exposed t...
