The two short stories, "The Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz and "Greasy Lake" by T. Coraghessan Boyle are good examples of narrations that depict the terrifying issues that youths can encounter in their transformation journey into adulthood. The two stories gives a relentless, ample and sometimes raging expression that guides the reader through sagas that youthful generations faces.
Greasy Lake
Greasy Lake is a masterful story that covers a wide range of narration about the encounter of three teenage boys and a vicious, drug-dealing biker as well as the doomed love relationship between Nina Khruschev and Eisenhower. The terrifying journey of the prodigy's audacity shows how he has to endure the swift and painful transition of becoming a man in a suburban surrounding. Boyle successfully amplifies his own experiences in the story by using a first-person narration and providing authenticity and empathy to the reader (130). By the end of the story, the good times has gone from bad to worse and the reader is able to recognize that things were more serious all along the journey.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is the story of a nice but devastatingly overweight ghetto nerd called Oscar. Oscar lives in their New Jersey home with his rebellious sister and old school mother. He shares his dreams of finding some love in future as well as becoming the next John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (154). But it becomes apparent that Oscar may never get to achieve his dreams owing to "fukú," a curse that has followed his family for many generations. The curse continued to follow the family from Santo Domingo where they used live to the USA. The story opens the eyes of the reader into an astonishing contemporary American experiences that affects the people including the youth and their transition into adulthood. This is a comprehensive story of an endless human persistence and how people can take massive risks in the name of love.
