Leadership is an important aspect in life which is aspired by many but achieved by few. Many aspects come into play when we are deciding whom to follow and who not to follow. In most cases, leadership is greatly influenced by one`s character, a reason why character in leadership is an integral and an important factor. In order to influence and lead people, it is paramount for people aspiring to be leaders to understand what most people look for in a leader as well as the role of character in leadership
Role of character in leadership.
A leader must be able to inspire people. Inspiration can not be achieved if one doesn`t pay attention to what is affecting people. This means, a leader must be endowed with listening skills and a collaborative approach to issues. A leader who listens to his people and accepts opposing views is more likely to win the confidence of people he is leading.
A leader must be innovative and trustworthy. This calls for being imaginative and objective when making decision. It is for this reason that some people are entrusted with making decisions for an organizations while others are not. People who make workable decisions gain more trust from those they lead than those who aren`t capable of coming up with decisions that save the organizations during crisis and tough times (Josephson, 199).
Another character that plays a vital role in leadership is the ability to command respect. A good leader should not be demeaning and should be courteous. They encourage healthy competition within the team and always appreciate the effort of members in a team. Martin luther king once said people should not be judged by physical appearance but from what they are capable of doing.
