During World War I, alliances have been the major trend among states, in order to ensure their own security and sovereignty in times of conflict. Basically, alliances have been created to foster military, economic, and political relations/agreements between nations who have agreed to join an alliance. This is especially true in times of war where nations face the greatest threat from other countries trying to win over their sovereignty, since having an alliance simply means having someone to have your back in times of danger CITATION Wil17 \l 1033 (Wilde, 2017). However, in its most fundamental sense, alliances do not simply work in times of chaos. Most of the time, alliances also have agreements about trade, supply routes, and logistic backing among others, that are aimed at delivering the greatest benefit for each and every member of their group CITATION Wil17 \l 1033 (Wilde, 2017).
Aside from the advantages stated above, another importance of forming an alliance is having the ability to increase one’s bargaining range. Bargaining range refers to the power and capability of influencing the decisions made in the international level. Thus, countries who belongs to stronger alliances also mean that they have the ability to increase their own bargaining range while otherwise could be said to those which belongs to a less dominant group and/or those who do not belong to an alliance at all CITATION Encnd \l 1033 (Encyclopedia.com, n.d.).
With regards to the main reason why the alliance system during the pre-WWI and Interwar period led to conflict (war), is due to the fact that there is a “multi-polarity” of power during those period CITATION Shi13 \l 1033 (Shiwei & Baig, 2013). Multi-polar orders tend to increase the possibility of war and conflict breaking out as compared to bipolar patterns in which the power is only concentrated in two hegemons or major powers.
