Impact of Smartphones on Gender Inequality
There has been a lot of technology advancements and, in turn, this technology has changed the manner in which people interact with one another. Therefore, authors have put forward an analysis of their thoughts and studies based on the way that technology has changed the world. Among them is Michael Kimmel who wrote the "Girls in Guyland: Eyes on the Guys" article. The article outlines some of the challenges that a woman might face being a member of the Guyland. He also shows what the Guyland community expects from women, hence making the women a substantial part in the continuity of that community. In addition, Kimel offers several strategies that might be put into practice by both genders to overcome the issue of gender inequality. Also, Jean Twenge wrote the article "Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?" in regard to the current technological advancements. The article outlines the various ways by which the introduction of smartphones in the market has changed the desires and the ambitions of the young adults. Twenge also explains the manner in which technology has played a substantial part in causing depression and isolation among the young population. Therefore, this paper will discuss the ways in which various innovations such as smartphones might change the gender dynamics of Guyland as well as the manner in which it might affect the lives of the individuals that are struggling to meet the standards of Guyland's lifestyle. It will also explore the ways in which the technology discussed by Twenge complicates the conclusions made by Kimmel in regard to gender.
The community of Guyland has a notion that the adolescents are obligated to interact with one another in order to be accepted as a part of the society, and the use of smartphones has intensified the ways in which people interact with one another especially through the use of social media platforms. Such interactions enable teenagers and young adults to be a part of a society that believes in a virtual world instead of the real world. "Indeed, cross-gender friendships are among the most important new features of adolescent and post-adolescent life" (Kimmel 249). Cross-gender relationships are the relationships between people of different genders. As well, the post-adolescent life is the life that an individual has as soon as they stop being an adolescent. It is the young adulthood of a person. The community of Guyland believes that such relationships are an important act in society because, in most cases, they offer protection to women. The community acknowledges the women who choose to have more male friends as compared to female friends because they will be able to get sisterly protection, not unless stated otherwise in the relationship. Some of the relationships are also based on the idea of friends with benefits and, therefore, this makes it easy for women to also get protection from the man.
