One of the most successful drama/romance foreign films is Like Water for Chocolate. Directed by Alfonso Arau, the movie was first released in 1992 and has since received several recognitions and awards. Essentially, the film is about a young lady named Tita who leaves in one of the remote villages in Mexico. Just like any other woman, she falls in love with her love of life, Pedro and hoped to get married in the near future. Unfortunately, as her culture dictates, their marriage is prohibited. The youngest daughter in the family has never been married and she is most certainly not going to be the first in her village. In fact, her mother, Elena is happy to offer Pedro her other daughter instead of Tita for marriage so as to keep the tradition alive. Tita is to serve as her mother’s caretaker for the rest of her life. From a cultural viewpoint, this essay seeks to develop and demonstrate a foreign cultural awareness as portrayed in the film by reporting observations and thoughts.
Notably, this films portrays a Hispanic/Mexican culture in unique layers that challenge the most obvious cultural ideals that goes beyond the Mexican/Hispanic culture. The director uses this film to unveil the liberation of women via the enablement of food.
