To Kill a Mockingbird
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee advances a plot and characters who are loosely based on how she observes people around her and occurrences in 1936 when she was 10, near her hometown in Monroeville, Alabama. Although serious issues like rape and racial inequalities are presented, they are punctuated with warmth and humor; thus, readers are entertained. Legal issues in the story revolve around lawyering in an unjust society. Accordingly, the parent, Atticus Finch, serves as an example of an ethical person to the audience in the practice of law as he tackles the subjects of ethnic discrimination.
In the foregoing, Atticus Finch, a fictional barrister, defends Tom Robinson, a black charged for beating up and raping lady of the Western origin. In the setting of the American South, specifically in the town of Alabama, and in the 1930s, it is not expected that a white man would defend a black man since racial injustices were rife at the time (Banks, 2006, p. 239). Finch secures a fair trial for Tom despite community resistance thus, he serves as a legal icon. He puts an earnest defense for Tom, who would have otherwise suffered for a crime he did not commit. At a time when there were negative views of the people of color alongside racial divisions, Tom's quest for justice would have been futile. It follows that a white man's word was enough to send a black man to jail (Lee, 2010, p. 295). Atticus notes that this was wrong yet he could not do anything about it. Lee (2010) points out the racial injustice pervading the society and how Finch is against it in his advice to his kids:
