The Monuments Men
The Monuments Men is one of the best movies of the 20th century. Directed by George Clooney, the movie tells the story of a group of museum curators, artists and art historians of British origin who are sent to various nations to recover hundreds of thousands of artwork that the Germans led by Hitler and Goering had stolen from the nations that they conquered during the World War II. The team is tasked with recovering the pieces of art stolen by Hitler and ensuring that the works hidden in caves are not destroyed. All this is done to salvage the Western culture from extinction.
The mission of the seven men is just similar to the efforts by the Allied forces to end the War. This is pronounced when French and an English officer joins the team tasked with recovering the artworks. In order to aid their task, one of the members recruits the services of Claire Simone who had worked as a secretary to a German officer before and during the War. Her expertise helps in the recovery of numerous pieces of art.
Even though the movie is expertly written, it gives different stories of the diverse Monuments Men. This in a way tends to water down the narrative focus of the movie and diffuse its coherence. There is however, a unifying factor of the story when two famous masterpieces removed from the Belgian churches are found.
