Then Answer these questions:
1) Relate the tsunami to the theory of plate tectonics. Which type of plate boundary was present? What happened on that plate boundary to generate the tsunami?
2) Was this a predictable natural disaster (Do we know if this will occur again? Do we know when this will occur again?)? Explain your answers.
3) Construct an escape plan in case you are in a coastal area when a tsunami is going to strike. Where should people go when a tsunami strikes (is going farther inland enough?)?Entry

The earth is made up of several continent-sized slabs of rock called tectonic plates that form the continents separately. Japan lies on the Eurasian plate at the point where the Pacific plate rums the Eurasian plate. Every year, the Pacific plate slides underneath the Eurasian plate at the rate of three inches a year. As the Pacific plate slides beneath, it stresses the Eurasian plate and stress builds up.
In the case of the Japan tsunami, the stress over the plates has been over one hundred years. During this period, the Eurasian plate compresses itself on top of the Pacific plate and when the stress gets to it's optimum, is spring backs up. This motion pushes the mass of water running four miles deep across the sea. This comes with high speeds such that water can rise to five hundred miles per hour. It is this mass that flows to the coast causing the tsunami on the coastal towns.
The tsunami that hit Japan was predicted by the Japanese people because there were tsunamis that had occurred earlier and had been occurring over a few decades. Most of these tsunamis have been fatal and caused several deaths and destruction of property. After each tsunami, Japan has tried to prepare itself for the next tsunamis but each one comes with a different strength, stronger or weaker than the previous.
In Japan, there are walls that have been built to prevent the tides from getting to th...
