A Man Called Horse is a captivating American/ Mexican Western film that stars Richard Harris as John Morgan. The main character is captured and treated like an animal, ironically at his time of capture Morgan was a big game hunter. He is shown at a hunting trip in the West of America where his companions are ambushed and killed by the Sioux, and he is captured. The Native Americans take Morgan as a slave. He is observed as a Eurocentric from the beginning of the film where the film has to clearly show that Morgan is abandoning his British Aristocrat heritage to go hunting in America's West. The captures are also described to have never seen a white man before Morgan and his companions.
His Eurocentric position is also shown by; when he was captured, Morgan was named the horse, and he was given a treatment similar to that of a beast of burden. He, however, gain the interest of the tribe and one of the captive tutors him on their ways, the film shows he has passion and has gained interest in the captives culture. He also observes that one of the methods to escape his captors was through embracing their way of life, and he works his way up the Sioux ladder of success winning the heart of the chief's sister. He gathers respect by undergoing the painful ordeal of violence and pain which the Sioux warrior respect (Sun Vow). He passionately fights with earlier enemies now friends against the Shoshones where he gets his freedom back and head back to what the film portrays as civilization. The above statement shows one Morgan enjoying the new culture, and he is even happy to participate in their cultural activities, but the film observes that the right thing is Morgan returning to civilization even when his life has changed because of the new adoption of the Sioux culture. He got accustomed to the organized system of the Sioux traditions, beliefs, and customs, but the film wants the audience to see Morgan is relieved when he gets back to civilization.
