Central arguments
The movie Man With a Movie Camera was released in 1929. It is a Russian experimental silent documentary film that Dziga Vertov directed while Yelizavota Svilova edited. The movie is unique from other films of that era besides shaping the history of films worldwide. The movie does not have a conventional plot, characters, settings, or real actors but only uses the film's tempo to tell its story (Man with a Movie Camera (1929) movie). The movie uses the camera to tell the story of a typical day in a typical Russian city.
Vertov set out to carry out an experiment using different shots. In some scenes, the cinematographer went to dangerous levels of filming scenes under a moving train. Filming of the documentary happened in the 1920s. However, most of the cinematographic techniques still exist today, like double exposures, fast and slower motions, freeze frames, jump-cuts, and animations.
In the reading, Bazin explains the developments in the film industry over time. He concentrates on the genre of comedy how it has evolved, critically explaining the intentions of the cinematographer and viewers to interpret their techniques. For instance, Bazin talks about how Charlie Chaplin dresses in his movies. The choice of tuxedo suites enforces how the audiences perceive his jokes. According to him, the cinema language has revolutionized for a long time aiming at attaining realism.
In the movie, Vertov employs several cinematographic metaphors that inform the film industry today; metaphors that Andre Bazin talks about in the reading What is Cinema. In the movie, Vertov brings successful scenes of a funeral and a woman giving birth, a woman blinking and the window opening and closing, and a divorce before a wedding (Man with a Movie Camera (1929) movie). These metaphors communicate about the reality of daily life. Similarly, Bazin talks about the cinematographic metaphors that enhance films' themes and the general perception of life (Bazin, 145). Therefore, the movie and the reading inform the history of the cinema industry to date.
