1) In your own words, describe what independent living (IL) is and why was/is it important for PWD?
2) From the video "Defiant Lives (https://pennstate(dot)kanopy(dot)com/video/defiant-lives)" different countries IL movements were highlighted. Some of these occurred during the same time-frame (1960's and 1970's). However, as we've seen, across the world many PWD still do not have access to choice on how they live their lives. Describe how you think culture and societal views toward PWD impacts views toward IL for PWD (in all aspects of independence and ability to make decisions and have equal rights)?
3) What does "nothing about us without us" mean and why is it important to the IL movement?

5) Think about your average day. How many decisions do you make regarding what to eat and when..What classes can you take...What you want to do for recreation...Where you want to work...Where you want to live. Now think about how often across the world PWD do not have the right to make their own decisions. If you were unable to have choice over your daily activities and decisions that impact your life, how would that make you feel?

Independent living (IL) refers to the ability of the persons living with disabilities to live like everyone else; they should have opportunities and allowed to makes decisions which affect their lives. Additionally, independent living necessitates that people should be able to the activities they choose to and should not be limited by factors that have no effects on their counterpart nondisabled people. Independent living is crucial for persons with disability (PWD) since because they should not be judged by how they look. Instead, PWD should not be discriminated against in jobs, and they should also have an active social life. Also, independent living also promotes self-determination since PWDs are determined to obtain freedom and self-reliance.

Both cultural and societal views have huge implications for persons living with disabilities. In some societies, disability is associated with evil spirits or a curse (Bunning, p.2).
