Podcast Summary Extra Credit (up to 15 pts each)

For this extra credit opportunity, I would like you to produce a formal summary of one episode of a podcast from the list below. There will be links to each podcast on Blackboard.

  • Code Switch—a weekly podcast focusing on race and culture
  • Reveal—an investigative reporting podcast
  • Criminal—a true crime podcast that describes itself as telling “stories of people who’ve done wrong, been wronged, or gotten caught somewhere in the middle” (Judge).
  • The Science of Happiness—research-based podcast in which volunteers learn about and practice strategies for happier living
  • Reply All—A podcast about how people shape the internet and how the internet shapes people.

Formatting your summary:

At the top of the page you should list

  • The name of the podcast
  • The name of the episode and date of its broadcast, if available
  • The question you believe this episode is trying to answer. What are they trying to understand better in/through this episode?

After this section, the rest of the summary should be in paragraph form and should be between 1 and 1.5 pages in length, double spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman Font, with 1 inch margins on all sides.

In the body of the summary you should

  • Begin with a statement that articulates the central claim, argument or thesis of the podcast in your own words (how do they answer the question or problem you stated at the top of the page?)
  • Follow by describing the main examples or stages of the argument provided by support in the podcast, again, described in your own words. You may quote from the podcast, but if so, cite using the narrator or host in the author position. So if you used a quote from Criminal, at the end of the sentence, you would cite (Judge). (for Phoebe Judge). You do not cite a page number or time stamp for a podcast.
  • Describe their conclusions, if any, or lack of answers if that’s the case.
  • This is not a place for your own opinions or commentary—your job in a summary is to accurately and objectively report the contents of a text to someone who likely has not encountered it but would like to know its central ideas.
  • You can organize this into one or more paragraphs as makes sense to you depending on the structure or logic of the text and how you decide to organize the information.

Limit one summary per student per week.

You may submit up to 5 summaries for extra credit throughout the semester.
