Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Catholic Imagination/Ethos & Film Analysis The film titled “The Trouble with Angels” is a comedy film released in 1966. The film is about two adventures teenage girls in a Catholic school managed by nuns. The friends grow up playing pranks on the nuns through their junior and senior high-school days. Mary grows up resenting Mother Superior’s authority and wondering how a woman would dedicate her life to be a nun. However, as Mary grows older, the nun’s actions of compassion touch her, and she eventually decides to be a nun soon after her graduation. The movie was inspired by Jane Trahey’s book titled ‘Life with Mother Superior’ which is about the accounts of Jane’s personal life during her high school years in a Catholic School (Providence-St. Mel’s School) close to Chicago in the 1930s. The character of Mary is based on Mary Courtney, Trahey’s friend, who became Sister John Eudes of Sinsinawa Dominican. Ida Lupino is the director of this film which stars Hayley Mills as Mary Clancy (a rebellious teenager), June Harding as Rachel Devery (Mary’s clumsy friend), and Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior. The other notable casts in the film include Merge Redmond as Sister Liguori(the math teacher), Mary Wickes as Sister Clarissa (the gym teacher) and Portia Nelson as Sister Elizabeth( the art teacher). The movie is cast in St. Francis Academy, Pennsylvania. The film incorporates all the Catholic imaginations, starting with the attire worn by the nuns. The halls of the church are seen to have images of Jesus and Mary, his mother. Statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus outline most of the architecture of the building.
