Creating a Request for an Informational Interview
Last week you asked a friend or business contact for an introduction to a person who could offer you professional advice. This week, you will write an email introducing yourself to the person to whom you requested that introduction. You are hoping to meet with this person for an informational interview to discuss your career objectives, learn more about working in a particular field or organization, or ask for guidance in developing a business of your own.

Part 1: Brainstorm

In your brainstorm,
Identify questions that you might want to ask if you get an informational interview.
Part 2: Email
Page two of the template provides a space for you to write a professional email, introducing yourself to someone and requesting an informational interview.
In your introduction email,
Craft a strong opening sentence that describes how you got the reader’s contact information and why you would like the meeting
Summarize your professional background
Provide details about what you would like to discuss.
Show courtesy and gratitude to your reader
Use concise language
Use appropriate and businesslike word choice
Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, if you have one, in the signature of your email
Sometimes, the most helpful and relevant career information can't be found online. The best information typically comes from networking with those who are working in the field. For that reason, scheduling a career conversation (also known as an informational interview) serves as a critical research tactic. Someone in the field can give you helpful tips, discuss what the field is like, or they can connect you with someone that you want to meet.
