In this course, you have been exposed to many early childhood theories and theoretical frameworks for explaining child development. This assignment will give you the opportunity to apply that knowledge within the context of a real-world childhood trend or issue.
Research a current trend or issue related to a child development theory. Some example issues include, but are not limited to:
Behaviorism
Behavior rewards/systems in the classroom
Montessori approach
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Erickson’s eight developmental stages
Vygotsky sociocultural theory
Review current literature on the child development theory you selected and consider its effect on learning environments related to early childhood students.
Assume the role of an early childhood teacher and write a letter of 500-750 words to your school administrator.
In the letter, take a position on the theory you selected. Your perspective should promote professional practice in early childhood education by advocating for or against the theory for early childhood students.
Include the following in your letter:
Description and analysis of the theory, and how it is related to early childhood education
Your position advocating for or against the selected child development theory promoting professional practice in early childhood education
Evidence-based research that supports your position
How your position upholds ethical standards, professional standards of practice, and/or relevant laws and policies in order to carry out this work within the public arena with compassion, justice and concern for the common good.

I have been in active teaching practice for five years and have seen children achieve significant milestones. Over the last couple of months, I have been researching the best learning approach we can adopt to earn holistic development of the young students at our institution. I delved into Erickson's theory of evolution, which sheds light on the impact of lessons learned during a person's growth stages.
Erik Erikson came up with the theory of the eight stages of development. He explained that the psychological and social experiences faced during each development phase greatly contribute to an individual's personality. Trust versus mistrust is the first development stage. An infant who experiences tender care will likely trust the universe to satisfy their needs. Infants who are neglected remain with trust issues during their lifetime. Establishing trust during this stage is important to restore hope in developing children (Erskine, 2019). Autonomy versus shame is the second stage, which lasts 2 to 4 years. During this stage, toddlers develop some sense of independence and they express their feelings too. Validating the child's feelings helps them be sensitive to particular expressions while discouraging them from self-doubt and shame. The third stage experienced between 4 to 6 years is initiative versus guilt. Children who are encouraged develop goals and take the initiative to achieve them. Those who are criticized develop guilt. The initiative can be developed by letting children choose activities they wish to engage in. Industry versus inferiority is the fourth stage, which runs between 6 and 12 years. During this stage, children seek praise for their achievements. Those who do not receive affirmations feel inferior and doubt their abilities (Maree, 2021). It is, therefore, important for teachers and caregivers to provide support at this stage. Identity versus role confusion is the fifth stage. During this stage, adolescents seek to discover their identity and place in society. If overwhelmed by expectations, they may not be able to discover their identity.
