Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practices are practices that are based on scientific evidence. The criteria that may be used to determine whether or not practices are based on evidence include whether the practices are effective in scientific studies, whether the practices are based on sound scientific principles, and whether the practices are safe and effective in clinical trials (Luckner, 2006). Organizations have different standards and criteria for what they consider effective or evidence-based. For example, the What Works Clearinghouse has different standards for what it considers effective than the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The WWC looks at whether a program or intervention has been shown to produce positive outcomes in well-designed randomized controlled trials, while NREPP looks at whether a program or intervention has been shown to produce positive outcomes in well-designed studies (Odom et al., 2005). Thus, a program or intervention may be considered effective by one organization but not by another.
