Injuries are physical damages to a person’s body caused by either an accident or an attack. They can cause death, disability or leave a person with scars. The injuries include falls, hits, scratches, burns, fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, or bruises. The essay provides a summary of two articles portraying the research carried out to overlook the issues of injuries recorded worldwide. They focus on the causes, and measure that can be implemented to curtail the effects associated with the injuries. The articles are “Traumatic Injuries in Developing Countries” by Stewart, et al and “The Global Burden of Unintentional Injuries” by Chandran, Hyder and Peek-Ass. They further analyze the cause of the accidental injuries incurred.
Traumatic Injuries in Developing Countries
Research undertaken by Stewart, Groen, Kamara, and company on the traumatic injuries in developing countries reviewed that injuries are affected by the infrastructure within the nation. Further, it reviewed on the prevalence of ailments caused by the hurtful injuries experienced in Sierra Leone. It further classified the insight associated with the injuries and the effects it causes to the nation (Stewart, et al., 2013).
The exploration led by Stewart et al. (2013) on the demographic distribution of the injuries and the descriptive epidemiology was undertaken sampling locations within the 14 districts in the country. The research portrayed the spread of injuries incurred between the rural and urban regions, with the rural region leading in injury occurrence. The injuries were caused by gunshots, motorcycles, falls, and road accidents. Besides, the higher proportions of the affected individuals were males. Injuries affecting the back and groin augmented with age.
Questionnaires were implemented in collecting views from the respondents. The limitation experienced was that the respondent under-reported omitting injuries that might have been caused by domestic violence, social stigma and female genital mutation.
