Pouresmaeili et al., (2018) found that osteoporosis is a bone disorder caused by changes in bone structure. The worst outcome of this disease is increased bone fragility and fracture which raises morbidity and mortality rates. Osteoporosis is a major risk in the elderly population and is initiated when an imbalance between bone resorption and formation occurs. According to Pouresmaeili et al., (2018), modifiable risk factors are centered around diet and lifestyle choices. Major non-modifiable causative factors include a history of falls, aging, gender, white ethnicity, previous fracture, and a family history of osteoporosis. Some secondary risk factors are related to long-term use of corticosteroids, chronic liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and dementia. Bozeman (2023), reported that osteoporosis is more likely to develop in persons aged 50 years and older, with women being more at risk than men. Currently, over 44 million people across the United States are affected. Nurses can play a key role in management and restorative therapy. The provision of educational and emotional support for patients will help them to understand and address their risk factors for osteoporosis. Moreover, it fosters patients to make informed decisions and lifestyle changes that can help them to maintain strong, healthy bones. Patients can also be educated on ways to adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular weight-bearing exercises, and avoid harmful habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption (Bozeman, 2023).
