Description
Along with the family and religion, inequality is one of three sociological universals. For most societies today, especially those that feature a strong market economy, that inequality is expressed as a stratification system known as “social class.” In U.S. society, there are five primary social classes – upper/capitalist, upper middle, lower middle, working, and working poor/lower class. Inevitably, social class systems of stratification, like the other two major kinds of stratification (i.e., slavery and estate/feudal), are expressions of various inequalities in a society.
PART ONE: using the sociological concepts introduced to explain social class (income/wealth [i.e., financial capital], occupational prestige, education, social capital and cultural capital), select any three of the five social classes and describe them as a sociologist would by using the above mentioned concepts. Be sure to define the concept or to demonstrate that you know what it means as you answer this question. Also, why did you select those three social classes, that is, justify your selection.
PART TWO: Sociologically speaking, what causes poverty in U.S. society? Be sure to link your answer to sociological concepts and sociological theories of poverty from the lectures.
A suggested length to your answer is between 400 to 800 words – for both parts. The word length is only a suggested minimum and suggested maximum. You may answer in fewer words than 400, but ask yourself if you have fully answered the question. You may answer in more words than 800 words, but ask yourself if you have too much verbiage (i.e., b___s___) that is not really relevant to the answer. In other words, regardless of the length of your answer, demonstrate that you listened and viewed the lectures and that your answer is connected to the content of this course.
You may apply personal examples (about you, your family, your community, your friends and your society), but you must be sure that you link these examples to the subject matter of the lectures in this course. Otherwise, the examples are extraneous and will lower your grade.

Quality-- The discussion post shows you invested some time and effort in your answer. It addresses the discussion question fully. It is not full of typographical errors, misspellings, or poor sentence structure. A good idea is to write the post in Word with the spelling and grammar checker on.

The division of a society of a financial basis has been happening since time immemorial. It is no different in the United States, where the division leads to social classes such as upper, upper-middle, lower-middle, working, and lower class. The American notion is that handwork pays, but the playing field is not level. Individuals in higher classes have resources that have a head start compared to those in lower classes in all aspects of life. This system allows the rich to get richer while the poor stay poor or worse.

The middle class in America is the smallest due to growth in either side of the social class spectrum. Individuals in this class live a comfortable life where they can afford basic needs and have financial security.
