The electronic cigarettes have been introduced in the United States’ market since 2007 (Etter, 2017). The objective of this electronic device is to simulate the smoking process by heating in a nicotine-containing solution. The resulting aerosol is inhaled by the user and the companies offering these devices as an alternative to conventional tobacco smoking are enjoying sustainable financial increase and increased market share in the industry (Etter, 2017). The rates of using electronic cigarettes are extremely high in the young population and according to an estimated 19% of young people start their smoking life by using e-cigarettes. Almost 50% of the smoker population have tried e-cigs and 23% of them are using both electronic and conventional tobacco smoking (Etter, 2017). The motive behind the rapid adoption of e-cigs is the desire to quit, control, and making the process more convenient (Etter, 2017). Nevertheless, the nicotine consumption in form of cigarettes has been identified as the root cause of premature deaths both in the United States and around the globe. According to a survey, smoking results in the 20% deaths only in the United States (Etter, 2017).
The nicotine cigarettes and their alternatives in the shape of electronic cigarettes contain varying concentration of addictive drug nicotine and several other hazardous chemicals. According to an analysis conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the nicotine concentration in most of the brand averages around 5 mg/m3 (Cotti, Nesson, & Tefft, 2018). The concentration of the nicotine and hazardous materials is also affected by the applied voltage to the solution. The exposure to these materials might result in the accidental drug overdose for the users and can prove to be fatal. The main drug nicotine has been observed to have both muscarinic (vomiting, diarrhea, and salivation) and nicotinic (cramps, hypertension, and depression) effects and these disorders are treated by long and hard treatment techniques (Cotti, et.al, 2018).
The general chemical ingredients of an e-cigarette are propylene glycol, glycerol, ethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycerol mixed with artificial flavors and variable or constant doses of nicotine (Mendelsohn, 2018). Apart from these chemicals, several other organic compounds have been identified in the electronic cigarettes with the majority of them belonging to conventional tobacco based chemical by-products (Mendelsohn, 2018).
The commonly employed operating mechanism of the e-cigarettes is simple, including the vaporization of the solution containing nicotine. These devices generally include a battery, a cartridge (including the chemicals), and an atomizer for heating the solution (Mendelsohn, 2018). The liquid solution is converted into vapors and these are inhaled by the user. One of the driving factors behind the rapid adoption of these devices was the absence of smoke, odor, and combustion as it is observed in conventional cigarettes.
