Formal Art Review: Infinity Mirrored Room - The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away

You are required to write three art review papers this semester. You will visit an art museum or art gallery and select one single work of art to write about. If you are unable to see artwork in person, you may (with instructor approval) use an artwork that is seen from the internet.  A formal review is a paper that analyzes the formal elements of a work of art in the context of its subject matter. The formal elements include visual elements like line, color, texture, and shape, as well as principles of design like balance, unity, variety, emphasis, subordination, and contrast. The subject matter is the idea or concept which you believe the artist is attempting to communicate. You are demonstrating your comprehension of art terms and concepts and how they can be used to connect to greater themes in a work of art.  Purpose These reviews will also help in developing your critical thinking and analytical skills. Advanced critical thinking and analytical skills will give you the ability to solve problems, understand complex ideas and clearly explain them. Being able to carefully study a set of information and then making educated assumptions will make you a better employee, employer, caregiver, voter, consumer, and citizen of the world.   Task For these assignments you will be required to view the works of art in person at an art gallery or museum and use that artwork for your analysis. • The chosen artwork must be made by a professional, contemporary, living artist.  • You may be required to review a work of art at the LMU Center for the Arts in Cumberland Gap. • Get all the pertinent information about the artwork (Name of Artist, Title, Dimensions, Medium, Year it was completed, Location of the artwork.) • Get an image of the artwork. Note: some galleries and museums will allow you to take a picture or the artwork, but ask first. If photographing is not allowed you will often find an image online at the gallery/museum website or the artist’s personal website. • Read basic information about the artwork (artist’s statement, museum tags, artist interviews) to get a better feel for what the artist was attempting to convey to the viewer. (If you quote any of this material, remember to cite it in your analysis).
