Hope in The Marrow Thieves
The theme of hope is one of the main subject matters in The Marrow Thieves. The saying that "hope is the backbone of our survival, and it's the core of our strength" is significant and relatable as it relatively summarizes the central message of the fictional novel. When she was discussing the creative process of The Marrow Thieves, Cherie Dimaline says that her main goal in writing the story was to give hope to indigenous readers and enable them to be stronger and more powerful than they think they are. Her meaning and the reader's understanding of confidence stems from her being an indigenous person and her creation of a significant narrative that is reminiscent of her idea that despite all the occurrences and the adverseness of situations, there is the hope of a sense of belonging, unity, and peace. This essay seeks to explain the meaning of hope to the readers, how hope works in the novel and denote particular sections where characters display hope in the book.
In the novel, the theme of hope works as a unifying and survival tool in the dystopian future where foreigners have lost their ability to dream and are now hunting indigenous people to forcefully harvest their bone marrows as a care to their condition (Dimaline 7). The phenomenon makes the indigenous people, especially the youths; fail to view any significance in their lives and role in society. However, even in the negative and horrible environment in a viable future characterized by terrible outcomes, the whole group of characters manifests how hopeful they are.
