Sex trafficking is a violation of human rights. Human trafficking is a serious crime. Sex trafficking involves activities like sex exploitation and sex slavery. The consent of a person cannot be relevant if it was obtained by coercion, fraud or deception. For example, a child cannot give any approval to being trafficked. A person can be coerced to offer sexual services to customers (Robert Moossy). Today, sex trafficking has been a form of modern slavery. It is very difficult to determine the number of people who have been trafficked. For example, approximately 27 million people are trafficked globally every year with girls and women accounting for 75%. According to the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act 2008, it is unlawful for an individual to benefit from prostitution of another person or purchase sex knowingly from a person who has been trafficked. Penalties like life imprisonment apply to these cases.
