Summary of Mike Bunn’s Article
Mike Bunn begins his article by introducing the concept that all writing is made up of a series of choices (Bunn 72). He then explains the basics of reading like a writer (carefully examining what you read and examining the writerly techniques) and introduces the concept of using quotes at the beginning of a piece of work (Bunn 73). Bunn describes how RLW is different from “Normal” reading in the third section of this article. In “Normal” reading, the reader barely scratches the surface of a piece for information, whereas, in RLW, the process is much deeper, causing the reader to think about what the author is conveying (Bunn 74). Bunn then acknowledges that RLW is a new way to read, and can be difficult to adopt for college students (Bunn 75). He encourages his readers to learn RLW which will be beneficial in improving their writing skills.
