The problem/concern is that nurses are not independent from doctors; they need to be more independent from them. Presently in the state of Maryland, there is a rising shortage of doctors, and this problem can be addressed by simply permitting nurses who have advanced skills to work more independently from doctors. To make this happen will require a change in state law. Currently under Maryland law, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have to work under collaborative practice agreement with a supervising doctor offering healthcare services in the certified level of training of the nurse (Rochefort & Clarke, 2013). My proposal/idea is to free advanced practice registered nurses from that requirement and permit them to diagnose, provide treatment and prescribe medicines for patients without agreement with a physician.
Earlier reports have shown that allowing APRNs to perform diagnosis, offer treatment, and prescribe medications to patients independent from physicians will help in addressing the problem of doctor shortage not only in the state of Maryland, but in the entire country as a whole (Bogaert et al., ...
