Critiquing viewing Dance and Dance Performances: “Migrations”
4 students of Richard Move performed a dance routine last Friday, December 1 at 7 pm in a dance concert that comprised of different sets of performances and members. The whole event sponsored many young talents that were aspiring to become better at dance choreography. It featured mainly 4 groups. The one that I will be focusing on would be the dance performance that was choreographed by Guanglei Hui, Richard Move, Carolyn Webb and Edisa Weeks, the whole routine being directed by Richard himself.
The show has successfully knocked on the door of curiosity and wonders that can be felt and expressed through dance. It had a unique vibe that almost got the audience on a trance, focusing on the simple yet elegant steps of the dancers’ routine. They utilized different equipment like boxes and other props that emphasized the importance of positioning in the expression of their art. Three of the performers wore matching light outfits that emphasized the 4th one who had a dark outfit. The ambiance of the stage has been set to put the dancers at the center of attention of the viewers. They all wore light garments that showed the slimness of their bodies and the gracefulness and softness of their movements. The dancers were very successful in their ability to project their acts in resonance to the music. Speaking of the music, it consisted of a very simple rhythmic pattern that was not too slow and not too fast. The presence of melodies and harmonics put an accent to the drumming and the expressive yelling of the music. The movement of the dancers colored the performance by being in the rhythm. The music gave the flow and a “story” to the dance routine. With the use of fog machines going on at interval moments, specific scenes of the dance were given emphasis. The music is trancy but simple, making use of sudden harmonics, consisting of a set of notes that tickled away at the ears and stimulated not only a part of the brain, but a portion of the soul. The music was simply beautifully mixed and arranged that it was able to garner an emotional upheaval in me as a spectator.
The theatrical elements of the dance consisted of the general curve of a story, following a pattern that presented an introduction, a rising action, a climax, a resolution and a finale. For me, the upbeat and rhythmic music paired with simple movements that synchronized the four members was the introduction of the story of the dance. The vibe then got more complex and more enchanting as the dancers presented more and more complex movements as their performance went on. The performance was taken into another level when the use of environment and placing were emphasized with the use of the lighting and their equipment. The presence of the boxes gave the routine a definition and an expression of visual arrangement as the dancers danced on top of their box arranged in a pattern, echoing the music’s uniqueness and its grace.
The title of the dance performance: “Migrations” is mirrored in the dance routine as it kind of depicts a movement of the people, synchronized at time, and sometimes depicting individual acts that ...
