A person’s immediate environment can influence overall health and related outcomes. Living near a dumpsite or in a polluted environment can negatively impact one’s overall health. For example, an individual’s exposure to air pollution due to the emission of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxide by industries and vehicles augments their risk factors of contracting cardiovascular as well as respiratory infections. Accordingly, environmental pollutants such as pesticides and heavy metals can cause water pollution, thus increasing the probability of contracting severe diseases such as cancer once they consume contaminated water (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2018). Furthermore, environmental pollutants can negatively influence individual health by causing food contamination. For instance, when individuals consume poisoned food, they develop manifestations of gastroenteritis infection caused by the Salmonella bacterium. Exposure to microbes such as bacteria triggers aflatoxins, especially in cereals which constitute food poisoning.
